Obituary - Alvin Barber, 88, passed away on Saturday, August 26 in the LDS Hospital, Salt Lake City, Utah. He was five days from celebrating his 89th birthday. Alvin was born August 31, 1911 in Vernal, Utah to John and Claudia May Massey Barber, the fourth of seven children.

Alvin moved from the Uinta Basin to Provo in 1926 with his family. Alvin worked for the CCC's during the 1930's, both in Utah and Idaho. He worked for Boeing in Seattle from 1939 until 1947 when he moved to Salt Lake City where he resided until his death.

He worked many years for the Salt Lake Public School System, but his most favorite job was as a crossing guard for the Salt Lake Department of Public Safety, which he did into his 8O's.

Alvin married Bessie Jones in 1942 and they were later divorced.

Alvin married Thelma Ann Armstrong on June 26, 1961 in the Salt Lake Temple. She died on September 18, 1999. Al and Thelma enjoyed a very rich life together as they traveled extensively throughout the United States and to several foreign countries, including the land of Israel. They served two full time LDS Missions, one to the Mississippi Jackson Mission and the other to the Florida Tallahassee Mission.

Alvin is survived by his son, Jimmie Alvin (Marilyn) Barber, two daughters, Virginia (Phil) Stratton and Marilyn (Paul) Clint, and stepchildren: Ted (Lorraine) Thaxton, Darryl (Lynette) Thaxton, Virgene (Dick) True, and Gailyn (Debbie) Thaxton. Also surviving are a brother, Bud Barber, and two sisters, Jona Verholtz and Marieda Verney, and 38 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000 at the Emerson Ward chapel at 1621 South 1100 East, SLC, Utah at 1 p.m. Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Wednesday evening, 6 to 8 p.m. and an hour prior to the services at the Emerson Ward building.

Interment in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
