A Union Army veteran of the Civil War, George W. Barber enlisted as a private in Co. F, 3rd Potomac Home Brigade Maryland Infantry at Hagerstown, Maryland on October 11, 1861, at age 31. He was a painter by trade & born in Funkstown, Washington County. He was 5'6" tall with dark hair, grey eyes & a fair complexion.
He was captured at Harpers Ferry, Virginia on September 15, 1862, paroled the following day & sent to Alexandria, Virginia in November 1862.
Promoted to Corporal, he was on duty with the Ambulance Corps in August 1864 & from September to December of 1864, he served as a nurse at an Army hospital. He mustered out at Buckhannon, West Virginia on December 31, 1864, when his age was then given as 33.
