She was born Nov. 8, 1925, in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Charles H. and Gladys V. Stein Barber. When she was still a child, her family moved to California. She was a graduate of Beverly Hills High School, where she played both trombone and French horn in the school band. During World War II, she labored in the shipyards in Portland, Ore. She and her husband owned and operated Hand's Department Store in Vevay and then in Madison. She had also been employed as a statewide census taker and real estate agent in Madison. She was an avid bridge player, playing in many tournaments. She enjoyed spectator sports from the Little League games of her neighbor's children to professional playoffs, gardening, solving crossword puzzles and time with friends and family. She was a community supporter with special interest in the Jefferson County Historical Society and in the recognition of our country's veterans.
She was preceded in death by her husband, M. Keith Hand, whom she married March 26, 1949, and who died Jan. 30, 2005; her parents; one niece; and one nephew.
The funeral was at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial was in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
