John was born on Feb. 2, 1939, in Atchison, Kansas, the son of Victor W. and Bessie B. (Mayfield) Barber.

He attended Atchison High School and served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during the Taiwan Conflict.

He and Karen Miller were married on Aug. 19, 1961 in Santa Maria, Ca., where they made their home until moving to St. Joseph, Mo., in 1966, later moving to Atchison in 1970. John worked over thirty years for Rockwell/Atchison Casting Steel Manufacturing Plant in the maintenance department, retiring in 2002. He was a member of the Protestant faith, the Atchison VFW #1175, American Legion Post #6.

Some of the things John enjoyed were playing his guitar and harmonica, photography, delivering Meals on Wheels, he enjoyed visiting and making new friends and spending time with his family, but most of all, his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jerry, and David.

I AM FREE
Don't grieve for me,
for now I'm free....
I'm following the path God laid for me
I took His hand when I heard Him call
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day, to laugh,
to love, to work or play.
Tasks undone must stay that way
I've found that peace at the close of the day.

If parting has left a void, then fill it
with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah, yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish for you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I savored much
Good friends, good times,
a loved one's touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all to brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and share with me,
God wants me now, He set me free.
