Tuesday, May 18, 2010 Mrs. Ruth Almond of Dillon, S.C., passed away Sunday, May 16, 2010, at her home.

Visitation was from 6-8 p.m., Monday, May 17, 2010, at Kannaday Funeral Home in Dillon.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, in Kannaday Funeral Home Chapel in Dillon.

Interment will be at 4 p.m. in Locust Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Locust, directed by Kannaday Funeral Home.

She was born Ruth Mae Barbee in Stanly County in 1933. She was preceded in death by her father, Ira Barbee, and her mother, (the former) Essie Hahn, both of North Carolina. Additionally her brother, Stancil Barbee, and her sister, Evelyn Carriker, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Almond married Luther Albert "Boots" Almond in 1948. They lived and worked in Locust for years before moving to Dillon, in 1965. Husband and wife opened a series of "Big A" auto parts stores in Dillon, Marion and Mullins as well as Lu-Ru Fashions Women's Wear in Dillon. After her husband, Luther, passed away in 1976, Mrs. Almond continued to own and operate her parts stores for many years to come. "Miss Ruth" was known for her tremendous work ethic and integrity in business.

After retiring from the auto parts business, Mrs. Almond kept herself busy by working at the local Winn-Dixie store and at Twin Lakes Country Club. She attended Bermuda Baptist Church.

Mrs. Almond is survived by her two sons and one granddaughter. Dr. Greg Almond and Dr. Tod Bania of New York and Ron, Heather and Emily Almond of Atlanta.

The family would especially like to thank Mrs. Almond's many friends who have helped out. Mrs. Almond's constant companion, Harold David Bryant, has been invaluable. Mr. and Mrs. Willie Webster, Ms. Peggy McIntyre and Robert Stubbs have made these past months some of the happiest of her life.

Memorials may be made to the Dillon Rotary Club Scholarship Fund and/or to Gideons, P.O. Box 111, Dillon, SC, 29536.
