Dr. Billy Richard Banta
(January 13, 1928 - December 8, 2008)

Dr. Billy Richard Banta, 80, of Hiawatha, died Monday afternoon, December 8, 2008 at Lighthouse Guesthouse in Hiawatha surrounded by family.
He was born January 13, 1928, to Howard Scott and Margaret Ruth Sharp Banta in Leavenworth, Kansas, Bill contracted polio at the age of 2 and fought the disease his entire life. He was married to Lois Joan "Jody" Wyatt Banta for 56 years until her death in 2004. After graduation from Kansas University in 1951, he graduated from Dental School at the University of Missouri in Kansas City in 1955, he then joined in practice in Hiawatha with Dr. Gordon L. Teall in 1956. Over the years, he was a member of numerous dental and social organizations including Kiwanis, Masons and Shrine, all of which he served in many offices and boards. He was inducted into the International College of Dentistry in 1974. He enjoyed hunting, photography, water colors, collecting guns and being a private pilot.

He is survived by three daughters and their husbands: Leslie and Harrison Idol Jr. of Hiawatha; Beverly and Tom Yokum, of Waverly and Becky and Herb Kuhn of Springfield, Virginia; 5 grandchildren and their spouses: Dr Rachel Idol, St Louis, Missouri; Thomas and Melanie Yokum, Emporia; Jeff and A.J. Idol, Omaha, Nebraska; Benjamin Yokum, Wichita and Jennie and Darian Pierce, Hiawatha. He was thrilled to have a great grandson, Owen Yokum, Emporia and was eagerly awaiting a great granddaughter in Omaha who will arrive in March. He is also leaving behind his faithful Wednesday morning coffee group.

The family is honoring his request that there be no memorial service or visitation. Cremation with inurnment will follow at a later date at Hiawatha Cemetery. The family requests no flowers and suggests memorials to: Doves, Battered Women's Center of Atchison; Morrill Public Library in Hiawatha, or to the hospice of your choice, which may be sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 124 S 7th St., 66434.
