Bernice was born on September 27th, 1910 in Newlin, Louisiana, and was the daughter and youngest of five children of Major Church Alford and Lulu Sims Alford. After the untimely death of her parents, Bernice was raised by her siblings. Bernice married Iddo Burt Bankston in 1930 and lived in Jasper, Texas, where they raised two children, Virginia Lee and Sarah Lu. After their children were grown, they followed job opportunities in Monroe, Louisiana, and Biloxi, Mississippi, before retiring in 1972 and moving back to Jasper. In 1991, Bernice moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to be near her daughter, Virginia. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Iddo in 1980; her sister Sybil Gainer; her brothers Fitzhugh Alford, Harry Bill Alford, and L.B. Alford. She is survived by her two children - Virginia Lee Redd and her husband Norman Redd of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Sarah Lu Eichler and her fiancÚ Joseph Machado of Sterling, Virginia. She had five grandchildren - Marie Helene Clark, Myra Holly Coffman, Melvin Harrell Durham, Jr., Tiffany Serene Harmon and her husband Stephen Edward Harmon, and Clifford Clarke Eichler and his wife Heather Lea Coleman; and four great-
grandchildren - Kacie Malnar, Ashley Clark, Nicholas Lee Harmon, and Sara Kathleen Harmon.
Bernice served as President of the Jasper Ladies Golf Association from 1953 to 1954. She was an avid reader and bridge player, a terrific cook, and nothing made her happier than spending time with her family. As Bernice was a breast-cancer survivor, donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society.
