| Birth: | Aug. 24, 1921 Burley Cassia County Idaho, USA | | Death: | Nov. 9, 2011 | Reed Bankhead passed away Nov 9, 2011 at his home in Boise surrounded by his family just 5 days before his 69th wedding anniversary.
Reed was the 5th child born to Hannah and Pole Bankhead on Aug. 24, 1921 in Burley, ID. Reed had four brothers and three sisters.
He attended schools in Burley and Twin Falls before he enlisted in the Navy in 1939 with his good friend, Alan Tilley. Reed served 6 yrs. as a machinist mate. Both young men served on the USS Idaho and later the USS Missouri where Reed witnessed the surrender by the Japanese ending WWII. His family was especially proud that 4 of the 5 Bankhead brothers and 1 brother-in-law served in the armed forces during WWII.
It was in Nov, 1940, during a shore leave in Oakland, CA that mutual friends introduced him to a beautiful brunette, Marjorie Butler, at the local bowling alley. Reed soon realized he had found the love of his life and couldn't live without Marge. They married 1942. Their son, Reed Edward (Butch) was born Dec, 1944, in Twin Falls, ID, while Reed was overseas. Butch was their only surviving child, the apple of his father's eye and truly a chip off the old block.
When Reed came home from the war in 1945, he started his 37-year career in the trucking industry. He loved driving and drove routes all over the western states. Reed and his siblings remained close throughout their lives. At one time, they all lived on Taylor St. in Twin Falls. They loved being together, camping, riding their Harleys, picnics, family reunions, and in their later years, winters together as snowbirds in the south. The Bankhead family loved to tease each other and have fun. More importantly was being there to support and care for each other.
Reed, Marge and Butch lived for a many years in Fremont, CA before retiring to Boise in 1983. In 1999, Reed and Marge lost Butch, 55, after a long battle with cancer.
Reed is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie, and his youngest sister, Ruthe, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Reed was preceded in death by his 4 brothers, Clarence, Willie, LaMont, and Bob; his 2 sisters, Beth and Mary Norene.
A celebration of Reed's life was held at the family home on Sunday, Nov 13. It was attended by close family and friends.
