Margaret M. Banes | Teacher, 81

Margaret M. Banes, 81, of Plymouth Meeting, a retired teacher and founding president of an animal welfare organization, died of cancer Sept. 18 at Suburban Woods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in East Norriton.
Miss Banes taught English at Olney High School for 30 years, and also directed theater productions and was adviser to the photography club.

"She had a motherly way about her," said a colleague, Gary Kauffman. Miss Banes never married or had children. "The students were her family," Kauffman said. After retiring from Olney in the 1980s, she continued to substitute teach there for several years.

In the 1950s, Miss Banes and other teachers who were animal lovers started Spay and Save. The organization raises funds to provide low-cost neuter and spay certificates to those in need, assists elderly or handicapped people who need help caring for their pets, and finds homes for abandoned dogs and cats.

A native of Philadelphia, Miss Banes earned a bachelor's degree from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia and master's degrees in English and in education from the University of Pennsylvania.

She has no immediate survivors.

A Memorial Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Paul Church, Johnson Highway and New Hope Street, East Norriton. Friends may call from 9 a.m.
