The son of William Ettley & Sarah (Parthemore) Bamberger, in 1860 he was a farmer presumably living in or near Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, but is not found in that census. By 1865, he stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg February 7, 1865 (apparently with parental permission because he gave his correct age), mustered into federal service there February 10 as a private with Co. C, 192nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 24, 1865.

He married Mary C. Diffenderfer and fathered Emanuel (b. 06/17/70 - lived to 100), Laura (b. 08/07/73), William Alfred (b. 12/15/75), and Charles Franklin (b. 07/03/80). Mary died in 1885, and he married Susanna G. Detwiler that same year, but there are no children reported. Cause of death is listed as "hemorrhage & shock from fracture at the base of skull caused by being struck by automobile."
