He married Mary C. Diffenderfer and fathered Emanuel (b. 06/17/70 - lived to 100), Laura (b. 08/07/73), William Alfred (b. 12/15/75), and Charles Franklin (b. 07/03/80). Mary died in 1885, and he married Susanna G. Detwiler that same year, but there are no children reported. Cause of death is listed as "hemorrhage & shock from fracture at the base of skull caused by being struck by automobile."
