Bert Balzar's Funeral Being Held Tomorrow
Prominent Hawthorne Resident Had Long Career
Funeral services will probably be held in Reno at 2:00 this afternoon for Bertram R. (Bert) Balzar, who died suddenly in Hawthorne Sunday morning.
Widely known in Nevada, Mr. Balzar was 70 years old, and had apparently started at an early hour in the morning to walk to a wood yard west of town. He collapsed a short distance west of the corrals, and was found shortly after 9 a.m. Death was attributed to natural causes.
The last male member of one of the most prominent families in Mineral county, Bert Balzar had spent most of his live in that area. He was born in Carson City but moved to Hawthorne with his parents at an early age. As a young man he was employed by the old Carson & Colorado narrow-gauge railroad as a conductor.
Mr. Balzar's brother, Fred Balzar, was appointed first state senator, and later served as sheriff of this county and then was elected governor of Nevada in 1926. Fred Balzar died in 1934 while serving his second term as governor. Another brother, the late Herman S. (Top) Balzar, also served as a Mineral county commissioner.
In 1918 Bert Balzar enlisted in the army and served in France during World Way I. Following his honrable discharge in 1919 he returned to Hawthorne and again entered employ of the railroad company and for a short time worked in Inyo county, California. He returned to Hawthorne in 1926 and had lived here continuously since that time. For many years he was employed by the state highway department with maintenance crew in Hawthorne.
Mr. Balzar was affiliated with the Masonic lodge while in Inyo county and was a member of Esmeralda Lodge No. 16., Knights of Pythias, in Hawthorne. He also became a member of J.F. Shain post Veteran of Foreign Wars shortly after it was organized in Hawthorne in 1931.
Immediately surviving relatives are one sister, Mrs. Florence Davis who lives in Elizabeth City, N.C., and a niece, Mrs. Phyllis Vargas of Reno.
Funeral arrangements are now being made by Mrs. Vargas and it is understood that services and burial will be in Reno.

Final rites for Bertram R. Balzar were held Friday afternoon at Ross-Burke Co. Chapel, under the direction of the American Legion, Joe Romaine was commander, and Frank Roser officiated as chaplain.
Members of the color guard and firing squad were William Black, Andy Anderson, Carl Sutterblaun, William Gonzales and Vern Kester. Pallbearers were Joe menu, Don Lewers, Vern Hepper, Elmer Boyne, Pat Harris and William Mayo. Interment took place in the family plot, Knights of Pythias Cemetery.
