OBITUARY
Verna Elizabeth (Reid) Balthrop, Sugarland, TX, passed away in Sugarland, on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at about 10:00 AM, while under hospice care in the home of a family friend. She succumbed after a lengthy battle against ravages of Alzheimer's Disease.
She was 89 years old, having been born on September 1, 1917, in Robertson County, Texas, to James Robert and Bessie Estelle (McLeod) Reid.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Granvil Harold Balthrop Jr.; her son Granville Harold Balthrop III; daughter Janice Ann Kieffer; 3 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Her brothers, Robert Arnold Reid and Harold Clyde Reid Sr., and her sister, Lucille Drucilla Sheffield, predeceased her.
She graduated fromSam Houston State Teachers College of Huntsville in 1939 with a degree in Home Economics.
She taught at Crosby High School in Crosby, Texas, for 1 year prior to her marriage in Huntsville on April 10, 1940.
After working full-time as a housewife and raising her family, she returned to teaching in 1960, teaching Third Grade at Dickinson Elementary School, Dickinson, Texas, prior to her retirement from teaching. For the past 7 years she and her husband have been residents of Brownsville. A graveside funeral service Monday morning, July 2 at Elliott Cemetery, Robertson County, Texas.
