He was a lifelong member of Sherando Methodist Church, which he helped to build a number of years ago. Mr. Balsley was a well-known farmer until his retirement. Born May 26, 1874, in Augusta County, he was a son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Mayo Balsley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Jane Baber Balsley.
Survivors include four sons, Glenwood J. Balsley and Paul E. Balsley, both of Lyndhurst, Rex E. Balsley of Stuarts Draft and Delbert W. Balsley of Waynesboro; one sister, Mrs. Ida Hyden of Fishersville; also 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The body remained at the Etter Funeral Home until one hour prior to the service, which was conducted this afternoon by the Rev. R. Lee Nuckols, assisted by the Rev. Wilton E. Allen. Burial was to be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were the following grandsons: Robert E. Balsley, Billy Balsley, Guy Balsley, Paul Balsley Jr., Glenwood Balsley Jr. and Jerry Cook.
Honorary pallbearers were G. F. Coiner, Clark Loving, Boling Loving, Martin Wheeler, Edward Clements, Isaac Johnson, Albert Hepner, E. O. Davies, Charles Patterson, Dr. B. K. Weems, B. G. Fitzgerald Sr., B. G. Fitzgerald Jr., Lee Patterson, F. W. Harmon and Theodore Loving.
