DAVENPORT - Funeral services to celebrate the life of Adelbert R. Balluff, 94, a resident of Davenport will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2007, at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Davenport. The family will greet friends Tuesday at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service.

Mr. Balluff died unexpectedly on Friday, December 7, 2007, at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport, following a brief illness.

Adelbert Richard Balluff was born January 2, 1913, in Davenport, a son of Carl Richard and Mabel Jane (McCrellias) Balluff. He was united in marriage to Esther Lucille Eckhardt on November 3, 1939, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clinton, Iowa. They were blessed with more than 68 years of marriage.

Mr. Balluff retired from Caterpillar Inc. after several years of service, where he served as a talented machinist. While employed he was a member of the union. During this same time he and his wife, Esther owned and operated Balluff Grocery on South Concord Street in Davenport.

During World War II he worked for the Rock Island Arsenal in the war effort.

In younger years he had been an accomplished athlete and enjoyed playing baseball, basketball and football. He carried this love of sports throughout his life and enjoyed following numerous sporting events.

Memorials are suggested to the Davenport Friendly House.

Survivors include his wife, Esther, Davenport; a daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Vic Sathre, Outing, Minn.; a son, Lawrence "Larry" Smith, Davenport; and a grandson, Thomas Sathre, St. Cloud, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Timothy Sathre, a sister, Lovenia Lucas, and brothers, Victor Balluff and Jesse Miller. May they rest in peace.
