Levi J. Ballou was the son of Ebenezer and Marania Ward Ballou. Levi lived with his uncle from the time of his father's death until age 12. He then apprenticed to the carpenter's trade until age 21. He received a common school education. When Levi became of age, he and another apprentice set up a business for themselves for about three years. Levi bought a farm, living there for a year.
August 21, 1833, he married Mary Marble. They started West, driving by team to Lombard,IL. With $15 and an old team, he staked a claim. Here he farmed for about 6 years. Then, he bought a place located just north of where the Wheaton College now stands. In 1857, he moved to his present place of 116 acres, one mile southwest of Wheaton.
Levi was a Republican serving as Road Commissioner 12 years, and Postmaster 7 years. He was an active supporter of the Methodist Church, in which he was a Steward, a Trustee and class leader. He was respected as an upright and useful citizen of the community.
