Augustus Marble Ballou was the son of Levi and Mary Marble Ballou. He was the only boy in the family and a twin to Augusta Ballou Davidson.

Augustus was a fun-loving happy man according to his little nieces, the daughters of his sister, Orpha Ballou Barnes. He was a family man, who instilled learning and the Bible into his children. The family was Methodist. Augustus was killed in a train accident shortly after his son, Robert was born.

The Ballou children were Frederick Herbert, Mary Ellen, Wilbur Newton, Fannie Lillian, twins-Burton Augustus-died infancy, Walter Leroy, Joseph Ladd, and Robert Oleson.
