A delayed birth certificate was recorded for Dorothy in the Kingsbury Co. Court House in De Smet, SD, on March 14, 1940, sworn on the 12th.
Dorothy was born on a farm northeast of Hetland. She attended School #44. She enjoyed horseback riding and reading. She graduated with the second class to graduate from Hetland High School in 1923.
Dorothy attended Eastern State Normal School at Madison, SD, and wrote for the school paper. She received a 1st Grade Certificate on June 21, 1924 and taught one year at Canistota, SD.
She returned to Eastern Normal for one year and then taught at Presho, SD, for 3 years, then at Country School #45 north of Hetland. While there, she met her future husband, Tom Anderson.
She taught for 2 years at Forestburg where her future brother-in-law, Glenn Prunty was superintendent. She helped with the girl scouts there.
In Canistota, Dorothy was active at the Presbyterian Church in the women's group, as a teacher, on Church Council, and enjoyed most her work in the library. She belonged to Rebeccas of the Odd Fellow Lodge, Senior Citizens, and a study club.
Dorothy began teaching again in 1950 in the country schools around Canistota. She attended summer school as necessary to keep up her certificate and acquired nearly enough credits to graduate. She retired in 1968.
In November, 1982, she moved to Michigan to be near her daughter Shirley who lived in Lansing. In 1990 Dorothy was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and in November moved to her daughter's home. In March, 1995, Dorothy moved back to Canistota, SD, to the Good Samaritan Center there. She fell and broke her hip on Feb. 8, 1996, and died in Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, the next day.
Services were held in both the United Church in Canistota, and the Congregational Church in Hetland. Burial was in the Hetland Cemetery.
