Ruth I. (Balleweg) Summers entered into the full promise of the Kingdom of God on Aug. 19, 2010. Born April 4, 1921, in Pueblo; she enjoyed 89 years of a full life in her hometown. She is deeply grieved by her son, Ed Summers; and daughter, Sister Marie Therese "Kathy" Summers; along with her grandchildren, Paul, Denise, Jennifer, Sarah and Alyssa. She shared a special bond with her daughter-in-law, Karen Summers, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, friends and special neighbors. She had an inclusive love of her two stepsons, Stewart and Don Summers. She is survived by her brother, Robert (Alice) Balleweg. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lorenz and Julia Balleweg; brothers, Richard, Ray, George; and sisters, Peggy and Therese. Her Catholic faith and church were her strength in challenging and ordinary days. She believed dearly in her country. She was the first WAC volunteer from Pueblo to serve during WWII. She had a huge heart filled with love, encouragement and affirmation for her immediate and extended family, along with numerous friends. She was an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. She was a committed Affiliate of the Society of Mary with a profound devotion to the Blessed Mother. She was member of Chi Gamma Phi, enjoying her association with other business women. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk. She also worked in personnel at the Pueblo Ordnance Depot. Later in life, she earned her certificate as a psychiatric technician from Southern Colorado State College while working at the Colorado State Hospital. Her family is grateful for her care at Parkview Medical Center and the valuable support of the Sangre de Cristo Hospice in the last months of her life. Ed and Kathy wish to express their profound gratitude to the individuals who were at Ruth's bedside, granddaughter Jen, Sister Mary Phyllis Echterling, Betsy Meyer and Kathy Martin. It has been a sacred transition and journey. Her family now invites you to celebrate Ruth's life at her memorial service. A vigil will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, George McCarthy Historic Chapel.
