Major Arthur Wayne Ballard passed away unexpectedly at his home in Plant City on Feb 24th. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Beverly Susan Nunn Ballard , Father-in-Law Russell Edward Simms, Sr of Tampa, Fl, and Sister Nina Mae Ballard of Plant City, Fl.
He is survived by his sons Terry and wife Kathy of Asheville, NC, David and wife Pam of Omaha, Nebraska and James of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mother-in-Law, Hazel C Simms of Tampa, Fl, Brothers Ray and wife Sandra and Terry Otis and wife Daphne of Plant City, Fl, Brother Jerry and wife Patsy of Dover, Fl, Parents Nina and Arthur Ballard of Plant City, Fl and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Ballard served his country as a pilot and Staff Sergeant in the US Air Force during the Korean War and then worked for many years as a pilot in the private sector. He achieved the rank of Major in the Civil Air Patrol and assisted in several search and rescue missions. He went on to serve many years as Flight Captain on private corporate jets. On one flight aboard a small private plane going from Alabama back to Florida, Captain Ballard lost his flight and navigation instrumentation shortly after take off. Never one to panic, he pulled out a compass and a road map and safely navigated himself and his passengers back to Florida following the US highway system and his map. He was an incredible pilot and a much loved husband.
