Chadwick's History of Shelby County, IN:
".... Operated a sawmill on Conn's Creek, Rush County, IN, then brick mason in Shelbyville, IN. A '49er', walking from Shelbyville to Sacramento; successful in search for gold but lost it in a tropical shipwreck. On his second trip to Sacramento, he took his wife and two daughters and settled; made six trips across the country."

Death Certificate: "John W. Ballard died at Swiss Station in the Sacramento area 1 Aug 1902 from old age. Age 89 yrs. 8 mo. 25 days. Lived at Swiss Station for two years. Male Caucasian. Retired from unknown. Buried in New Helvetia Cemetery, Lot 192, on 8 Aug 1902. Dr. White, Jr."

Burial & Reinterment: "John W. Ballard was originally buried in the old New Helvetia Cemetery at Alhambra Blvd and I Streets, Sacramento. In 1956, thousands of old graves were moved to the Sacramento City Cemetery at Broadway and Riverside Blvd. in order to make way for the new Sutter Jr High School. John was reinterred on 12 June 1956, on Tier 4, Grave 8, Box 319. Page 119B of Index. His wife, Rachel, who died in 1871, is NOT with him."

His name John W Ballard, is inscribed on the New Helvetia memorial plaque, commemorating his burial here.
