1/Lt John Kenneth Ballard (Kenny) graduated from Stamford (CT) HS in 1933, where he was class president his sophomore year. He played varsity football and was quarterback his junior year. He played football, baseball, basketball, and hockey with city teams and later starred in lacrosse and hockey at Fordham University.

Kenny Ballard enlisted in the Army in December 1941. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 4th Armored Division upon graduation from Officer Candidate School, Fort Knox, KY, in October 1942. He volunteered for the Paratroops and on completion of airborne training was assigned to the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

During the airborne invasion of Normandy, Lt Ballard was wounded about the face and jaw on 15 June 1944 and returned to action. He received a second wound in his abdomen in July and was evacuated to England. He was later transferred to Rhodes General Hospital in Utica, NY, where he underwent treatment for sixteen months. He went on terminal leave in November 1945 and was honorably discharged from the Army on 1 February 1946. Nine days later he was killed in an automobile accident.

Lt Ballard wore the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service Star and Arrowhead, Purple Heart Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, American Theater Medal, Croix de Guerre Unit Citation [French], World War II Victory Medal, Presidential Distinguished Unit Emblem, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Parachute Badge, and the WWII Honorable Service Lapel Button.

Kenny Ballard is interred at St. John's Cemetery in Darien, CT. His footstone bears Airborne wings and reads: 1st Lt John K Ballard, 507th PIR.
