A Humble Hero
Bruce David Ballard passed away September 9, 2013 at his home in Highland following a brave six-week battle with primary central nervous system lymphoma. He was sixty-one years old.
Bruce was born on August 26, 1952 in Murray, Utah, a son of Bruce Henriod Ballard and Laura Ann Greenwood. Raised in Draper, he was the oldest child in a large family.
In his youth, Bruce was involved in athletics and won the Draper City Punt, Pass & Kick contest three years in a row. He wrestled for Jordan High School, which he graduated from in 1971. He was a hardworking and honorable man. Bruce served an LDS mission in Los Angeles, California after high school and later attended Brigham Young University.
He moved to Moab and worked as a police officer in 1982 and 1983, which further instilled in him a love for public service. Later, he moved back north with his family to West Jordan and served as a police officer there before becoming a full-time firefighter. He was a hazardous-materials expert and loved the wonderful people with whom he worked at the fire station, his home away from home.
Besides his work, Bruce was also a wonderful carpenter; he loved the challenge of taking on a problem for someone and solving it with his great thinking skills. He loved to be hard-working, and was constantly out and about his yard completing various projects and tasks.
Over the years, Bruce served in various callings in the LDS church involving the youth. He was a Boy Scout leader, an assistant girl's camp director with his wife, and a primary teacher. Overall, he was a life teacher, always searching for opportunities to pass on valuable knowledge to younger generations.
Bruce lived his life as we all should: with his heart. He was always sticking up for the underdog from a very young age. He was never afraid to do the right thing, despite what others thought. He was kind and generous with his time and was always lending a hand to help others whenever he could.
He was married and sealed to his eternal companion and best friend, Shanna Watts. Together they have made a home where all are welcome. He loved to garden and loved caring for and attending to his farm animals. Family was everything to him, and together with his sweet wife they enjoyed fishing and hunting, hiking and exploring the outdoors.
Above all things, Bruce loved life. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Shanna; six children, and 12 grandchildren. Bruce's surviving family include his mother and nine brothers and sisters. He is also survived by Loralee Kirk and her daughter, Catherine Kastler. His father, Bruce H. Ballard, and his sister, Barbara Ballard Thomas, preceded Bruce in death.
Prior to his death, Bruce's fellow firefighters at the West Jordan Fire Department banded together to build a backyard deck for Bruce to enjoy during his final days. Though he passed away before completion, the deck will be used as a place for his beloved grandchildren to gather and play, just as Bruce would have wanted.
