WEST HAVEN - Gladys Thornton Ball died on Saturday, March 29, 2008 of cause's incident to age. She was 94 years old.
Gladys was born on November 4, 1913 in Evanston, Wyoming, the daughter of William and Ester Thornton. Her family moved to Ogden when she was very young and she lived there her entire life.
She married Fred S. Ball, Sr., on February 4, 1930 in Brigham City, Utah. The marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He preceded her in death in May, 2004. They had celebrated 74 years of marriage.
Gladys Ball was an early pioneer in the school food lunch program. She began her career at Mt. Ogden Jr. High and then opened and managed Quincy Elementary School and then became the manager at Mount Ogden Middle School. She held leadership positions in the District, State and National School Food Service Programs. During her last days, a hospice nurse entered her room and exclaimed, "Oh, there's my school lunch lady." The nurse had been a student at Mount Ogden nearly 50 years ago and recalled with pleasure Gladys's pleasant countenance and great expertise in the school kitchen and dining rooms.
She was a very active, dedicated member of her Church and served as Relief Society President and also Primary President for over 30 years.
She dedicated her life to her family. She was devoted to her husband, her children and her grandchildren. She was a gracious hostess and always had special meals and treats for her visiting family.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a daughter (Greta Joan Bachman); four sisters and a brother. She is survived by a sister Esther Christensen, Blackfoot Idaho; a brother David Thornton of Apache Junction Arizona; her son Fred S. Ball (Joyce), Salt Lake City Utah and a daughter Vikki (George) Moellendorf, West Haven Utah; 14 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 4, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Myers Mortuary Chapel, 845 Washington Blvd., Ogden. Friends and family may visit on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on Friday.
