Lysander Curtis Ball, Jr. was the son of Lysander Curtis Ball, Sr. and Evelina Patterson.

On October 20, 1863, Lysander enlisted in the Navy and performed duties in the Mississippi squadron. He was in several engagements along the Mississippi river and on the Yazoo, and in April 22, 1864 was aboard the "Petrel" when it was captured and destroyed by the Confederates. He was then ordered to the ram "Vindicator" for duty, where he served until March 16, 1865 when he was promoted to acting ensign and sent to the steamer "Juliet," where he remained until the close of the war. He reached home July 12, 1865, and was honorably discharged November 1, 1865.

On November 13, 1865 in Fremont, Ohio, Lysander married Hannah Morrison. He farmed in Fremont and then moved with his family to Lisbon, North Dakota. Lysander and Hannah had children: Martha, Charles, Elvira, Alma, and Evelina.
