Arra Mayse Cooley, 91, died September 8, 2007 at Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street with burial following in Lakewood South Memorial Park. Visitation will be 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. today and 10:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Cooley was born on April 30, 1916 in Simpson County, the daughter of the late Thomas and Lorene Ball. A resident of Terry for over 60 years, she was a pillar of the community. Mrs. Cooley was a member of First Baptist Church of Byram and served as the Director of Sunday School for 11 years. A member of the Order of the Easter Star, Chapter 342, she was honored to serve as a past Worthy Matron. She worked with the Rainbow Girls for 5 years. Mrs. Cooley was an avid gardener and served as a past president of the Terry Garden Club. Mrs. Cooley loved playing the piano and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be remembered as being a friend all who knew her and serving as mother to many.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Early Gray Cooley; son, Thomas J. Cooley; brothers, Seth Ball, Horace Ball, Riley Ball and Burgess Ball; sisters, Reba Cooley and Evelyn Kentworth. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter and a great-grandson.
Survivors include: son, James J. Cooley of Yerington, Nev.; son, Tommy Cooley of Baton Rouge, La.; daughters, Gwen Swords of New Albany, Toni Goodnight of Jackson, Retha Deiner, Fallbrook, Calif., Peggy Myers, Jackson; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Juanita Elkins, Raleigh, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
