Mr. Ballard was born September 30, 1918 in West Asheville where he had lived all of his life. When World War II began, he proudly served his country in the 14th Army Air Force Flying Tigers, 341st bomb group, and 22nd bomb squadron (China-Burma-India) from December 1941 to December 1945. After the war, Charles was mainly employed by Freck Radio and Supply Company in Asheville until retirement. Mr. Ballard was a member of Asheville First Church of the Nazarene where he taught Sunday school until he was 95 and overcome by Dementia. He was the son of the late John Alexander and Bertha Buckner Ballard and husband of the late Lorraine Roberts Ballard and the late Helen King Ballard.
Surviving are his daughters, Phoebe Ann and her husband Roger Dale Rice of Enka, and Stephanie Conda Ballard of Asheville; son, John Paul Ballard and his wife Donna Burgess Ballard of Asheville; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 20, 2015, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with Rev. Doug Hopkins officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park. (Edited by Jeff Lovelace.)
