Lawson Hugh Ballard, 93, beloved husband of Ruthe Williams Ballard, of 202 Robin Lane, Swansgate, Greenville, died Saturday, September 28, 2013. Born in Wilimington, NC, September 28, 1920, he was the son of the late Lawson D. and Eva Hobbs Ballard.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 68 years are daughters, Barbara Ballard and her husband, Tom Plott of Charlotte, NC and Judy B. Waggoner and her husband, Richard of Mt. Pleasant, SC; a son, Lawson H. "Sonny" Ballard, Jr. and his wife, Marianne of Greenville; a sister, Mrs. Laverne Armstrong of Wilmington, NC; four grandchildren, Lawson Ballard III and Katherine Ballard, Ryan Waggoner and Christopher Waggoner and wife, Kait. He was predeceased by a daughter, Emily Susan Ballard and a sister, Mrs. Winifred Collins of Georgetown, SC.
Mr. Ballard was a lifelong Presbyterian and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder and Trustee, and as Chairman of the Witness and Service Committee, including foreign mission activities. He also represented Westminster in early development of Foothills Retirement Community. He was a graduate of New Hanover High School in 1937, NC State University Textile School in 1943 and the University of NC Business Executive Program. He was a member of the Rotary Club, US Chamber of Commerce, Greenville Country Club and the Poinsett Club. He was active in the formation of the Masters in International Business Program (MIBS) at the University of SC. Mr. Ballard was a graduate of Infantry School, Ft. Benning, GA, a Veteran of World War II and served in Europe with the 102nd Infantry Division. He was discharged in 1946 as a Captain and awarded the Combat Infantry Medal and the Bronze Star. He was also a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans, George Davis Camp 5, Wilmington.
After military service he worked in the textile industry for more than 40 years in management and engineering, primarily as an International Textile Consultant. This included worldwide travel in more than 100 countries with major projects in Canada, Holland, Iran, Czechoslovakia, Sudan and 2 years in Uruguay. He retired in 1985 as President of Amatex Export Corporation, a textile management and engineering company. Upon retirement he did volunteer textile consulting in the International Executive Service Programs - IESC and USAID.
Services will be held 11 am Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 9:45 – 10: 45 am in the Church Lounge at Westminster Presbyterian. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church Fund, 2310 Augusta Road, Greenville, SC 29205 or charity of one's choice.
