Arnold A. Balko, 81, Cumberland, Wis., died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, in the Town of Almena, Barron County.

He was born Dec. 26, 1925, in Almena Township to Adolph and Augusta (Ernst) Balko. He was a lifetime resident of the Almena area and was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew Church, Almena. He attended Maple Grove School and graduated from Turtle Lake High School.

Arnold entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during WWII. He then came back to Almena and farmed. He operated an auto repair and gas station in Almena and also did woodworking. Arnold then became a machinist. He drove school bus for the Cumberland School District for many years and was a reserve officer for the Barron County Sheriff's Department.

He married Phyllis Holt at Almena on April 3, 1948. Arnold enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kathy (Ken) Miller of Barron; sons, Tom (Shirl) and Jerry (Kelly), both of Cumberland, and Dave of Almena; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lorraine (Bob) Garling of Prior Lake, Minn.

His parents and a sister, Irene Gill, preceded him in death.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Almena, with Rev. Norman Peterson officiating and burial at St. Matthew Cemetery. Pallbearers are his six grandsons, Brian, Rick and Scott Miller and Lee, Kyle and Chris Balko. Military honors will be accorded by Almena VFW Post #8512.

Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. Wednesday from Skinner Funeral Home, Cumberland, and an hour prior to services at the church Thursday.
