Phyllis Balkema, age 76, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2002, at her home. She was born December 1, 1925, to Arthur and Frances Anderson in Muskegon Heights. She married Harold Balkema in November 1953. Her first husband, Dallas B Morse, preceded her in death in 1952.
Mrs. Balkema grew up in Muskegon Heights graduating from Muskegon Hts. High School in 1943. She was a long time member of Olivet Reformed Church of Muskegon and had been very involved in the Ladies Guild. After moving to Spring Lake in 1964, she joined Christ Community Church. She was very active for many years in the Oswald Group of NOCH and was a longtime member of Spring Lake Country Club. Mrs. Balkema was previously co-owner of Mona Shores Toyota and currently co-owner of Great Lakes Insurance Agency in Muskegon.
Survivors included her husband, Harold, 2 sons, Ron (Joan) Morse of Spring Lake, Stan (Sue) Balkema of Norton Shores; 2 daughters, Paula (Tom) Bourdon of Norton Shores, Linda Jo Balkema of Muskegon; 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; 1 brother, Bob (Doris) Anderson of Fruitport; 2 sisters, Dorothy Grover of Muskegon, Shirley (Bill) Van Dam of Grand Rapids, nieces, nephews. Preceded in death by 2 brothers-in-law, Vern Runk and Len Plummer.
