Billy Christian Balke passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2008, in Mainland Center Hospital, Texas City, Texas after a battle with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) and Alzheimers. He was surrounded by his family. He was born at Somerville, Texas on December 12, 1928, to Christian William and Inez Sears Balke.
Visitation for family and friends on Sunday, January 6, 2008 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Crowder Funeral Home, Dickinson, Texas. Funeral services are Monday, January 7, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson, Texas, followed by a graveside service at 4:00 p.m. at Oaklawn Cemetery, Somerville, Texas.
Billy graduated from Somerville High School. After graduation he enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1948 at Houston, Texas. He served in Germany and Korea. He was discharged at Fort Hood, Texas in 1952. He worked for Monsanto Chemicals as a machinist until his retirement in 1986. He married the love of his life, Joyce Hein in 1955 and they made their home in Texas City, then Hitchcock since 1959.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church; VFW Post 5400; and honorary member and past Chief Cook of the Hitchcock Volunteer Fire Dept.
Preceded in death by his parents, his two best hunting and fishing buddies, his son, Jimmie Lynn Balke and son-in-law, Dwayne Payne, his father-in-law, Hugo L. Hein, brothers-in-laws Luther Brown, Henry and Tilman Hein and Louis Chollett.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joyce; his son, Robert Carl Balke; daughter, Marleta Sue Payne; daughter-in-law, Nancy Balke Mesler; granddaughters, Amanda Payne Bofferding, Christina Payne Turrubiate, and Lisa Balke Thompson; his great grandchildren, Noah, Micah, Ethan, Meghan and Naomi; and his sisters, Doreen Brown and Gwen Schoppe.
Also his mother-in-law, Nora Mae Hein; sister-in-laws, Dorothy McManners, La Verne Chollett, Nelene Marie Isom, Lourene Falk, Virginia Asselin, Alice Schiel, Sarah Munoz; brother-in-law Hugo Hein, Jr.; special double cousin, Julia Ziesmier, a host of family and friends.
