Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Tuesday, August 10, 1954, page 2:
  Edward F. Balke, 71, of 238 Seminole street died at 6:15 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph hospital, Highland, where he had been taken Saturday following a stroke. A lifetime resident of Edwardsville, he was a teamster and chauffeur. He was born Aug. 4, 1883, in Madison county, the son of the late Frederick and Wilhelmina (Kenetter) Balke.
  He is survived by four brothers, Henry, August, Louis and William Balke of Edwardsville; and one sister, Mrs. Lena Housen of West Frankfort, Ill.  He was preceded in death by one brother, Frederick Balke, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Determan.
  Friends may call at the Lesley Marks funeral home after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday until 2 p.m. Thursday when funeral services will be held from the funeral home.
  Interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery.
