b. December 9, 1839, Indiana. (Ohio). In the 1860 census of Jackson co., Indiana we find Alfred Baldwin age 20. He served in Co H, 6th Indiana Infantry, during the civil war from April 22, 1861 to August 22, 1861. He was mustered out in Indianapolis, at age 21.
Alfred, no doubt, came to Topeka, Kansas with his mother and stepfather in 1867. He was the first engineer on the Sante Fe system and ran engine No. 1 which was called Col. K. C. Holliday, in honor of the father of C. K. Holliday, Jr., who organized the system. Alfred ran this engine until the road was completed to Newton and later became master machanic.
m. December 19, 1869, Mary McDonald, b. 1850, Missouri. Alfred,"Fred" d. January 9, 1873, at the young age of 34 years, at Topeka. Burial was at the Topeka cemetery.
