Janette and her husband Lyman had moved to Vermont where he was working for a bank. They had just had their second child in August when in November Janette's father came to visit from Quebec.
Evidently someone had killed a bear and they were enjoying bear steaks, perhaps for the American Thanksgiving. Unbeknownst to the family, the bear had recently devoured a pig with trichinosis. Her father died in November, soon followed in December by Janette and then her husband.
Three-year-old Oscar was informally adopted by Janette's brother, Pardon Wilcox Baldwin, and his wife Ethel while the baby R. Jean was taken in by Lyman's sister Edith and her husband Luther Moulton who already had one son, Reginald.
Sadly, Edith Moulton herself passed away within two years, again leaving young R. Jean without a mother. In 1923 Luther married my great-aunt Ruth Miller who had lost five of her best beaux in WWI. R. Jean called her new parents Mum and Dad - and my dad had a new favourite cousin.
