Edith Elizabeth Bothman, 99, passed away May 31, 2014, at the Villas at Courtyard, Brookdale Senior Living in Albany.
Born Edith Elizabeth Baldwin on June 5, 1914, in Preble, New York, she was the daughter of Ira and Pearl Baldwin. She graduated from Tully High School in 1932. In 1936, she received her registered nursing degree at Syracuse Memorial Hospital and was a member of the nursing school's Agenda Honorary Society.
Betty married Clyde Kernek, M.D., in 1938. They resided in San Antonio, Texas; Holdenville, Oklahoma; and Wellesley, Massachusetts, before moving to Corvallis in 1954. Dr. Kernek died in 1977. Betty married Nicholas H. Bothman in 1978 and relocated from Corvallis to Albany in 1994. Mr. Bothman died in 2004. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Meribeth Schermerhorn; and two brothers, Sereno and Morris Baldwin.
Surviving her are three sons, Clyde B. Kernek of Shepherdstown, West Virginia; Sterling J. Kernek of Macomb, Illinois; and Steven P. Kernek of Portland. Also surviving are two stepsons, Robert Bothman of Portland and Bill Bothman of Tacoma, Washington. Betty also leaves 10 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren, and four step-great-great-grandchildren.
Betty helped establish the nursery at First Baptist Church in Corvallis, and she provided decades of volunteer service to the Pacific Chapter of the American Red Cross, Benton County Civil Defense, the Benton County Medical Auxiliary and the Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary. In Holdenville, she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and while living in Corvallis she belonged to the Garden Club and First Baptist Church.
After moving from Corvallis, she attended Eastside Christian Church in Albany.
She was interred at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Corvallis.
