George John Baldwin, age 85 passed away August 4, 2012. Dad was the second of 4 children born to the late Charles and Mary Baldwin on April 13, 1927 in Flushing NY. Dad was raised in Whitestone, NY. Dad left school in April 1944 to join the Navy, at the age of 17. Dad was assigned to the almost forgotten and rarely recognized, U.S. Naval Armed Guard (NAG) He served on what was known as the Murmansk Run. Early during the war it was estimated that only 1 of every 3 ships on this run would return to the U.S. safely. He was assigned to the S.S. Horace Bushnell and was aboard when it was torpedoed in March 1945. After serving 4 years in the Navy, Dad joined the U.S. Army and spent most of the next 4 years in Germany. After his discharge from the Army in 1953, he returned to New York and the only girl he ever loved, Laura. In May of 1954 they moved to So. California. Dad went to work for Ideal Paper Co. Though the company was sold several times Dad remained there 35 years until he retired in Dec.1989. Due to Mom's failing health they moved to West Jordan to be closer to us. Mom passed away in Dec.1991 and Dad remained with us. Although a man of very few words, Dad made his opinion on anything and everything well known. Dad was not likely to let the facts change any of those opinions. As part of the "Greatest Generation" Dad's word was his bond, his honesty was unquestioned, and although he had no use for politics, his devotion to his country was undeniable.
Dad loved his granddaughters, Amanda, Caleen, and Chelsea very much. Cala was more like a daughter than a daughter-in-law to him. She had cared for him as well as she had cared for Mom years ago. Dad is also survived by son, George Jr, Sister-in-law Susan Baldwin, Rockledge Fl. Preceded in death by parents, brothers, Charlie and Bill, Laura and infant daughter Dorothy.
Thank you to Heartwood Home Health & Hospice for taking excellent care of Dad, and a special thanks to Glenna.
Graveside services will be held at a later time.
