The Rev. William E. Baldridge Sr.

The Rev. William E. Baldridge Sr., 80, of Rayville, La., formerly of Dyersburg, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2007, at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, Texas.

He served as a priest in the Episcopal church for nearly 50 years, being ordained into the diaconate in late 1958 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Dyersburg and ordained into the priesthood on June 29, 1959, at Calvary Church, Memphis. He served at St. Ann's in Millington as a Navy chaplain for several years before moving to Monroe, La., to serve as a curate at Grace Church, Monroe, La. In 1966 he moved to Rayville, La., where he served at St. David's as well as St. Columba's in Winnsboro, La., for 41 years. Prior to becoming a priest, he worked as an auditor for Libby, McNeill, and Libby.

A memorial Eucharist was held Sept. 4 at Grace Episcopal Church in Monroe, La., with the Right Rev. D. Bruce MacPherson, bishop of diocese of Western Louisiana, and the Rev. Gregg Riley officiating. Burial was in Grace Episcopal Church Columbarium. An evening prayer service was held Sept. 3 at St. David's Episcopal Church in Rayville La., with the Rev. Kirkland Knight officiating. Mulhearn Funeral Home in Rayville, La., was in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Vail Delony Baldridge of Rayville, La.; three daughters, Kathy Baldridge Sutton and husband Joey of Ruston, La., Beth Baldridge Smith and husband Carl of Bastrop, La., and Mary Sue Baldridge Knight and husband Kirkland of Tyler, Texas; two sons, David Baldridge and wife Chrissi of Memphis and Will Baldridge of Houma, La.; a sister, Sue Baldridge of Memphis; two sisters-in-law, Sara Baldridge of Mobile, Ala., and Betty Reed of Lake Providence, La.; a nephew, Dave Baldridge and wife Sue of St. Louis, Mo.; a niece, Elizabeth Reed Scully and husband Don of Baton Rouge, La.; and six grandchildren, Chase Sutton, Michael Sutton, Megan Smith, Sarah Beth Smith, Emily Knight and Katie Knight.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ike Elbert and Ada Dozier Baldridge; a brother, John Elbert Baldridge; and a niece, Sharon Baldridge Johanson.

She was a member of Titusville (Fla.) First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Johanson, the wife of Roy H. Johanson Jr. of Titusville, also leaves her father and stepmother, John E. and Sara Baldridge of Mobile, Ala., and a brother, David Baldridge of St. Charles, Mo.; an aunt and uncle, William and Sue Baldridge of Memphis
