WYTHEVILLE, Va. - Fannie Ellis Baker Bailey, born Nov. 25, 1922 to Everette T. Baker and Lucy Tabor Baker, died March 29, 2011 at Carrington Place, Wytheville, Va. We remember Fannie as a loving nurturer, especially to babies and young children. However, we all reaped the benefits of her love, kindness and quick wit. She was best known for her quiet, unassuming manner, her gentle graciousness, love of family and her fellow travelers. As a pastor's wife, she was faithful to serve as Sunday School teacher and was a willing participant in other capacities over their 50 years of ministry. Two churches in which they served over the years were Clinton United Methodist Church in Kingston, N.Y. and the United Methodist Church of Clinton, Conn., and at her death, she was a devoted member of Reservoir United Methodist Church in Ashokan, N.Y.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Reverend Joseph G. Bailey, Sr.; infant daughter, Jennifer A. Bailey; and grandson, Jack Bailey. She was also preceded by sisters, Edith Shrader, Nellie Caldwell; and brothers, William Baker and Blaine Baker.
She is survived by five sons, Joseph G. Bailey, Jr. and wife Meg, Columbia, S.C.; Alvin T. Bailey and wife Margaret Ann, New York; Stephen T. Bailey and wife Sherrie, Kingston, N.Y.; Timothy E. Bailey, Ellenville, N.Y.; and Mark C. Bailey, Ossining; sisters, Vernon Hopkins, Wytheville, Va.; Zane Mahood, Wytheville, Va.; Louise Wilson, Wytheville, Va.; Virginia Epperson, Bluefield, Va.; Charlotte Baker, Lexington, Ky.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, March 30, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, Va., with the Reverend Ruth Ann Dinger and Carolyn Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Maple Hill Cemetery. The sons will serve as pallbearers. Friends may visit with the family from 1 p.m. until the hour of services. Dudley Memorial Mortuary of Bluefield, Va. is serving the family.
