Betsey was the daughter of Alexander Graham Trotter, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth Leary Grogan. When her father died in 1929, she and her mother moved to Winston-Salem to live with her maternal grandmother and Aunt Mary.
Betsey attended the Women's College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and graduated with a degree in Fine Art in 1941. As there were no positions available for art teachers during the depression, she worked for a year as a trainee in the furniture business in High Point. In June of 1942, she went to NC State College in Raleigh to attend a class in Architectural Drafting, as part of a war training program.
After completion, she took a job as an Aeronautical Draftsman at the Glenn L. Martin Co. in Baltimore, MD. There she met Justin Lee Baker, a co-worker, and they were married in Baltimore on June 26, 1943.
Justin was drafted in June 1944 and was sent to Europe. Shortly after WW II, Betsey and Justin taught in public schools in the Baltimore area until they retired in 1980. Betsey attended Towson State University and received a Masters in Education as a reading specialist.
Betsey and Justin had two children, Alison and Andrew. In 1995, they moved to Ashland, VA to be near their son and his family.
Betsey was an accomplished artist, but had many other interests and hobbies. She and Justin were avid sailors, dancers, bikers and travelers.
