Howard Clay Baker was the only son of Joseph Thompson Baker and Nellie (Middaugh) Baker of Colfax, Washington. He had three sisters: Eva Mae, Sina Louise and Josephine Baker. Howard grew up in Colfax and received his early education in the Whitman County schools.

The Baker family moved to Port Angeles, Washington in 1935 and Howard graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1938. He then served in the Army Air Corps with the Flying Tigers during World War II.

Howard was married August 23, 1945 in Macon, Georgia, to Margaret Topinko. They had two children: Jaye T. and Paul Joseph Baker, and four grandchildren. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Sidecar Association.

Career: After military service, Howard worked for Bethlehem Steel as a welder; he moved to Sekiu, Washington in 1955 and was employed by the Crown Zellerbach company until 1982. He moved to Sequim, Washington in 1985.

Howard was a grandson of America Holton (Thompson) & Daniel Ayres Baker of Colfax, Washington; a gr-grandson of Mary Elizabeth (Ford) & Capt. Joseph Moran Thompson of Wabash, Indiana; and a gr-gr-grandson of Dr. James & America (Holton) Ford of Wabash, Indiana.

Mr. Baker was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corp, 341st Bomb Group, 11th Bomb Squadron, China-Burma-India theatre, WWII. Thank you for your service.
