Walter Francis Baker Obituary
Walter Francis Baker, age 81, of 38 Indian Hill Dr., Waterloo, N.Y. (formerly of Seneca Falls, N.Y.) died peacefully in his home on Oct. 12, 2012, after bravely battling cancer.
Walter was born on July 20, 1931 in Meshoppen, son of the late Francis and Eliza (Brotzman) Baker. He attended Bloomsburg State Teachers' College and Elmira College.
Walter proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952 – 1954 in the 280 mm atomic gun battalion. He was a 59 year member of The American Legion where he dedicated his time serving as New York State Department Commander, Seventh District Commander, Seneca County Commander, and Commander of Kirk-Casey Post 366 in Seneca Falls. He was also the New York State Historian, State Chairman of Americanism, consultant on the National Children and Youth Commission, and involved with Boys State. Walter was always involved in the care and well being of all veterans who served our country that he loved so much. Walter retired from the U.S. Post Office and was a spectrographer for Sylvania Electric, Corning Glass and Westinghouse and an administrative manager for Sarah Coventry and Phillip's ECG. Along with his wife, Beverly, Walter owned McCarthy Jewelers in Seneca Falls for over ten years.
He married Beverly Wood of Vestal on Sept. 10, 1955 and they resided in Wyalusing and Wysox, and Elmira Heights, N.Y. before moving to Seneca Falls, N.Y., where they lived for thirty-two years. They retired in West Melbourne, Fla.. Walter later moved to Waterloo, N.Y.
Walter was a long time member of The United Methodist Church in Seneca Falls. He had a passion for travel, especially cruising, playing golf, and spending winters in Florida. Walter loved being in the company of his family sharing memories and family traditions. In his younger days, he enjoyed baseball, basketball and softball.
Walter is survived by his daughters, Deborah (David) Eannetta of Waterloo, N.Y., Cheryl (Kent) Music of Forsyth, Ga., and Carol Baker of Lizella, Ga.; his grandchildren, Trisha (Mike) Sarno, Mary (John) Conley, Stefani, Allison, Blakly, and Whit Music, Abbie and Andrew Baker; great-grandchildren Gia Sarno, Elijah Music and a great granddaughter Conley expected in December; his sister, Mable LeBaron of Vestal, N.Y., sister-in-laws Shirley Baker, Betty Baker and Sandra Wood; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly, of 46 years; father, Francis; mother, Eliza; sisters, Hilda, Frances and Jennie; brothers, George, Johnnie, Cyrus and Joseph.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Laceyville, with Rev. Eleanor Collinsworth of the First United Methodist Church in Seneca Falls officiating. Interment will follow at the Overfield Cemetery in Meshoppen, with graveside military services conducted by the members of the Rought Hall Post No. 510 American Legion, of Black Walnut, the Dennis Strong Post No. 457 American Legion of Tunkhannock and the Endless Mountains Post No. 3583 V.F.W. of Mehoopany. Friends and family are invited to call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2012 at the funeral home.
