John E. Baker, Jr., 74, passed away Monday, November 23, 2009, at M.S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey. John was born in Hanover, on March 26, 1935. He was a son of the late Geraldine M. (Hagerman) and John Edward Baker, Sr. He attended St. Francis College in Loretto, Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md., and Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He worked in Mexico as part of the Papal Volunteers to Latin America. Before retiring, he worked for the Commonwealth of PA in the Office of Public Welfare and in the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation. He was a U.S. Army veteran. After retirement, he returned often to Mexico for extended stays. He loved the Mexican culture and spoke Spanish fluently. He was an active and loyal member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 26 years. He was a dedicated member of the Secular Franciscan Order. He sought to live his life following the example of St. Francis of Assisi. He is survived by a sister, Stephanie Baker Ives, wife of Mark C. Ives of Belle Mead, N.J.; two nephews, Christopher M. Ives of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Gregory C. Ives of University of Pennsylvania; a faithful and loving companion, Blonca; and many wonderful friends. Funeral Mass on Monday, November 30, at 11 a.m. from The Church of St. Cecilia's, 202 E. Lehman St., Lebanon 17046. Interment at Annunciation Cemetery, McSherrystown. Viewing hours Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 126 S. 9th St., Lebanon, 17042, and Monday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at Church of St. Cecilia.
