In 1860, Samuel was a carpenter living with his family in Jackson Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file claims he was living in Carbon County at the time of enlistment, but that source is frequently erroneous as to home location. He stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 12, 1864, as a Private with Company C, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa). He was mortally wounded in action during an attack on the enemy's retreating columns near Raleigh, North Carolina, on April 12, 1865.
