JEFFERSON HERALD - Thursday, April 15th, 1937 - John Baker, well known citizen of Greene county, passed away suddenly at his home Friday evening following a heart attack. He had been in poor health for some time, but his death came as a great shock to his relatives and friends. He will be greatly missed in the Cooper locality.
The funeral service was held at the home Monday, April 12, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon with burial in the Franklin cemetery. Reverend Loren Thomas of Bagley, Ia., was in charge.
John Wesley Baker, son of William Birney and Hester Anne Baker, was born October 29, 1863 at DeWitt, Ia., departed this life April 9, 1937 at his home near Cooper, Iowa. When he was 5 years of age the family moved to Greene county where he has resided since, with the exception of 6 years at Lake View, Iowa.
He was united in marriage to Martha Smith in 1882. She passed away a number of years ago. On February 2, 1901 he married Ida Mae Neville. To this union three children were born: George William Baker of San Antonio, Texas; Mrs. Marie Anderson of Cooper, Iowa; Frank Sylvester Baker of Detroit, Michigan.
He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, sons, and daughter, two brothers, Oliver B. Baker of Bagley, and Chas. C. Baker of Jefferson, and one sister, Mrs. Zelda B. Calhoun of Deadwood, South Dakota, and a host of other relatives.
Those preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Sadie L. Baker. Those attending the funeral from a distance were: Mr. Frank Baker of Detroit, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. Niles Neville, Sarah and Charles Neville, Mrs. Elizabeth Purdy and Robert, Mrs. Albert Hanson, all of Odebolt, Iowa; Mrs. Lowal Spaulding of Cushing, Iowa; Mrs. Zelda B. Calhoun of Deadwood, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Birney Baker of Des Moines, Iowa; Mr. Cecil Baker of Chicago, IL.; Mr. and Mrs. M.E. Schertz of Carroll, Iowa. Mr. George Baker of San Antonio was unable to attend because of illness.
