He had one brother, Wayne Baker. He grew up farming with his dad and uncles, who taught him everything they knew about farming. He even went to roping school in Texas. Julius's passion was raising and racing Thoroughbred horses. Nothing was better than being in the winner's circle, he used to say.
He graduated from Omak High School in 1946. He was very athletic, playing basketball, football and holding three school records. One was the discus record, which he held for 40 years. The other two were in high and low hurdles.
He was drafted into the army in 1946. He received the World War II Victory medal and Army of Occupation medal. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
He then attended Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Wash., where he met his first wife, JoAnn Meacham. They had a son, Michael Craig Baker.
He later met and married Evelyn Robinson in 1961 and became father to her three daughters, Terry, Sandy and Debbie, who he raised and loved as his own.
Eveyln and Julius owned and operated Pioneer Cafe in Omak and the Sawtooth in Okanogan. Evelyn passed away in 1993.
He wore many different hats in his lifetime: owning and operating Baker's Tire Shop in Warden, driving a school bus, attending dental school, dispatching for the Washington State Patrol and managing his dad's orchard.
In 1997, he met and married Eldora Bjorklund, thanks to a blind date arranged by Sunny Woodside Baker. With this marriage, came three more kids: Kirk, Kris and Kevin. Julius and Eldora loved to go to Peoria for the Mariners' spring training. They loved to travel and spend time with family and friends in their 5th wheel and loved to camp.
Then came his first great-grandson, Tyler, who nicknamed him "Papa G" and it stuck. He got a kick out of watching Tyler race quads.
Then along came his second great-grandchild, Rylee. She was his only little princess.
Then came Cooper, Caleb, Keegan and Casey.
Julius is survived by his wife, Eldora Baker; brother Wayne (Sunny) Baker; his children, Michael (Sandy) Baker, Terry (Oscar) Michels, Sandy (Mark) Fisher, Debbie (Don) Harris, Kirk (Susie) McAllister, Kris (Donie) McLeod, and Kevin (Casi) McAllister. Julius had 17 grandchildren and six great-greatchildren; and a very special caregiver, Kathleen Calvin.
Julius was a member of the Conconully Methodist Church. Donations may be made to the church or a charity of choice.
He will always be lovingly known as "Papa G."
Funeral Services were 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, at the Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel in Okanogan.
Interment followed at the Okanogan Valley Memorial Gardens on Conconully Highway in between Okanogan and Omak.
