Daughter of Allen and Sarah Kidwell Baker. Married 1) Samuel B. Hemphill in December 1902 in Parker Co., TX and 2) William Alford Carver. Sam and Bertie had their first child in Parker County before moving to Amarillo where they had three more children. Sam worked as a railroad investigator there. One month after a fourth child was born Sam was killed at work. Bertie received 800 dollars from the railroad and went back to Amarillo after taking Sam back to Newberry for burial. The Amarillo authorities tried to remove the children from her care three times citing that a single woman could not care for so many children. Bertie persevered by taking on all kinds of work and kept the children. She later remarried. She eventually returned to Parker County with her daughter and her family. She also lived in Fort Worth and Azle before her death.
