ANITA DEE STEWART BAKER (Mrs. Malcolm Graham Baker) died peacefully Monday morning at her home in Houston after a brief illness. Anita was born at her family's summer home on Bay Ridge in La Porte on June 27, 1908, to Anita Bolmes and John S. Stewart. She grew up in her family homes on Main Street in downtown Houston, and later on Stratford Street in Montrose. Upon graduating in 1929 from The Rice Institute, whose yearbooks acknowledge her as the Queen of the May, she married her college sweetheart Malcolm G. Baker. Her life was her family, her many life-long friends, her social clubs, golf, and bridge, her garden and her church, St. John the Divine, where she and her husband were founding members in 1939.
Anita was blessed with a talent and openness for friendship. She was gifted with a spirit of generosity and compassion. The great joy of her life was in her children; her greatest sadness was the loss of her daughter, Shirley Baker Pond.
Anita is mourned by Shirley's husband, Warren B. Pond, Jr., and their daughter, Laura Pond Ballard and husband Marvin K. (Trip) Ballard III, and their children Kendrick, John, and Margaret; and by their son, David Pond and his wife Bridget. Also by Anita's son, Malcolm G. Baker Jr., his sons, Malcolm G. Baker III and wife, Sarah Baker, and Marshall Stewart Baker. And also by Anita's younger son, Stewart, his wife Julie, and their children Kelty Baker McFarlin and her husband, Robert Bruce McFarlin, and their daughter Katherine Leigh McFarlin; Eliza Bonner Gibbons and her husband Jorge Gibbons; Jessica Louis Baker, Joshua Warren Baker, and Hannah Elizabeth Baker. The family wishes to express its gratitude to Silveria Gonzalez-Monzon, Irma Paxtor, Josefina Perez, Patricia O'Toole, Barbara Perrodin, Cherlaine Guidry, and Opal Hunt.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM on Thursday, November 13, 2003, at the Church of St. John the Divine, 2450 River Oaks Boulevard, with The Rev. Laurens A. Hall and The Rev. Doug Richnow officiating. Interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: James A. Baker III, Lovett Baker, Preston Moore, James H. Moore, John G. Wolf, Jr., Bryan Wolf, William B.
