BJ Baker was born June 25, 1929, in Mexia, Texas, to Burton J. and Era Belle (Sims) Baker and died Sunday, November 20, 2011, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
BJ graduated from high school in Nashville, Illinois. He attended Texas Junior College in Kilgore, Texas, and attended Southeastern State College in Durant, Oklahoma.
He served in the U.S. Army 45th Infantry Division from September 1950 to August 1952. He entered the Army as a private and within 10 months he attained the rank of Master Sergeant. Special recognition was received when he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service (Korea), Army Occupation Medal (Japan) and the United Nation Service Medal.
In 1951 BJ met and married Mary Marcevene Lowther who he lovingly described as "The best dancer in Wewoka, Oklahoma." They settled in Ardmore, Oklahoma, where they raised three children.
While in Ardmore, Oklahoma he worked for Ardmore Milling Company. In 1960, he purchased Ardmore Milling Company and in 1963 formed Comet Feed Mills, Inc. He owned and operated the feed mill until 1977. In Ardmore, BJ served as a board member of the First Methodist Church, First National Bank, Oklahoma Feed Manufacturer's Association, Mid-West Feed Manufacturer's Association, American Feed Manufacturer's Association, and was President of Dornick Hills Country Club and Oklahoma Feed Manufacturer's Association. BJ also served his community as a member of the Optimists Club and Kiwanis Civic Club and was active in 4H and FFA Programs. BJ was a consummate salesman. Since 1977, he owned and operated marketing companies selling everything from agricultural to flooring products.
BJ was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Mary.
His survivors include his sister, Patsy and husband, Jim Townsend of Richardson, Texas; his son, Jay Baker of Chickasha, Oklahoma; his daughter, Kay and husband, Lonnie Kerr of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and daughter, Barbara and husband, Keith Mosier of Chickasha, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Kinzie and husband, Brian Jerman of Edmond, Oklahoma, Blake Kerr and wife, Maddie of Edmond, Braden Meadows of Weatherford, Oklahoma, and Jesse Mosier of Chickasha, Oklahoma; and great-grandchildren, Russell and Easton Jerman.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at Duncan Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home.
