Alfred Baker, a well-known and highly esteemed resident of this vicinity died at his home in Willow Glen this morning after an illness of about two months. Mr. Baker was born in Willow Glen seventy years ago and had been a life long resident of that hamlet, where he acquired considerable real estate holdings as well as in this city. He followed the carpenter's trade in youth, later becoming a builder.
Mr. Baker was a devout and active member of the Methodist Episcopal church and was instrumental, to a great extent, in making possible the erection of the chapel at Willow Glen about twenty-five years ago, so that the people of that community were accorded the opportunity of having church services in their midst. When circumstances were such that it was impossible for a clergyman to reach the chapel to conduct the Sunday service, Mr. Baker himself very often conducted the service and gained some little prominence as a speaker.
Previous to erection of the chapel, under his leadership, Sunday school was conducted for a number of years in the district school house at Willow Glen and it was the growing attendance at his Sunday school services that caused Mr. Baker to foster the idea of the erection of the chapel.
The survivors are his wife, Mrs. Verona Baker, one brother, John H., of this city, and a sister. Mrs. Lucia Devoe of Coons, beside a number of nieces and nephews of this city.
Arrangements for the funeral will be announced later.
