John Elwood Baker, son of Mary Jane and Henry Baker, was born December 11, 1860, near Bushnell, in McDonough county, Illinois, and departed this life March 23, 1941, at the age of eighty years, three months and twelve days. He grew to manhood in and around the vicinity in which he was born, coming to Missouri in early manhood. February 17, 1881, he was united in marriage to Amanda Boaz to which union five children were born, namely: James Samuel, Nancy Mae, William Henry, Nellie Maud and John Franklin, the latter dying in infancy and Nancy Mae several years ago. His first wife was called and departed this life November 4, 1890. Six years later, March 25, 1896, he was united in marriage to Julia Ann Hess. To this union, three daughters were born, namely: Bessie Elizabeth, Carrie Loretta and Mary Ethel. Almost one year ago, on April 7, 1940, this companion was called. Surviving are James of Quincy, William of St. Patrick, Mrs. Earl Clark of Canton, Mrs. Wesley Breeden of Good Hope, Ill., Mrs. J. W. Clark of Canton, twenty-one grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one brother, Frank, of Iola, Kan.; and half-brother, George of Good Hope, Ill., four half-sisters, Mrs. Rose Richards of Canton, Miss Lenna of St. Joseph, and Mary and Belle living in Basin, Wyo., besides many other relatives and friends. He was of Christian faith, having been baptized when an infant and led a christian life throughout the years and was ready to go when the summons came.
