Marie Baker was born in Keokuk County, Iowa , July 22, 1894. She was the only daughter born to George and Ella Baker. Marie completed her early education in Keokuk County, graduating from Sigourney High School in 1911, and then began attending Drake University, studying music and English. However, her mother became ill during her freshman year and she was called home before the end of that year.
For the next two years (roughly 1912-13) she taught music and English at the high school in Delta, Iowa, not too far from Sigourney.
When WWI started she volunteered locally in Sigourney with the Red Cross and later moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the War Department.
Following the war she returned first to Sigourney to work as a stenographer (this is shown in the 1920 census), then to Des Moines and took a position as a secretary at National Association of Des Moines, which is where she met Larry.
Larry and Marie were married Dec 1, 1923 and continued to live in Des Moines. Their only child, Loren, was born on Thursday, Nov 20, 1924 at Mercy Hospital. Sadly, Marie did not survive his birth and she died that same day. A brief service was held in Des Moines on Friday with her many friends in Des Moines attending. Her body was then taken to Sigourney for a second funeral service at 2:00 on Saturday at her fatherís home. She was laid to rest in the West Cemetery (later renamed Pleasant Grove).
